A selection of Germany endgame studies

By S. Hornecker

2.- H. Walkewitz-White wins

Nº16 Schach 1977, 4th prize

Hubert Walkewitz is a relatively unknown German composer, seeing he did only compose around 30 studies. The one I want to show as the number one in this – irregular – column that kindly was offered by Mario Guido Garcia to me to show noteworthy German studies consists seemingly only of a basic endgame that should easily be won. However, things are not that easy: Taking the queen results in a stalemate, and after 1.Bc3+ Qb2 2.Bxb2+ Kxb2 a drawn endgame has arisen. So what does White have up his sleeve to win?

Solution:

1.Bc3+ Qb2 2.Bf6!! Kb1 3.Qf5+ Qc2 4.Qb5+ Kc1 5.Bg5+ Kd1 6.Qf1 mate (or slower 6.Kf1 etc.)

The precise second move must make sure no line is obstructed, Black can’t take with check and White can give check on the diagonal. For this, only 2.Bf6 works. For example 2.Bh8 does not allow 5.Bi7+. 2.Bd4 and 2.Bg7 fail because Black can take the bishop with check. 2.Be5 disallows 3.Qf5+. So only the solution remains.

Similar moves are known from directmate problems, but having it in a study with only six pieces is very exceptional.
